Saint Mary's Online M.A. in Special Education

Saint Mary's online M.A. in Special Education program requires the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • A minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale
  • The language proficiency to succeed in graduate-level classes

If your overall GPA is below 2.75, you may be admitted by provisional status upon program director approval.


GMAT and GRE scores not required.


You may transfer a maximum of six semester credits earned before admittance upon recommendation of the program director and with approval of the dean.

All transfer credits are subject to both graduate school and programmatic criteria, and recommendation of the program director and with the approval of the dean.


Students with transcripts from universities located outside of the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada (except for the Quebec Province) are required to take and pass English proficiency testing.

Saint Mary's accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 72, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.0, the Michigan Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 74 percent, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 51, or the International Test of English Proficiency (ITEP) with a minimum score of 4.0.


Whether you apply through our online application, via hard copy, or in person with a Saint Mary's enrollment counselor, your application must include the following items:

  • $25 non-refundable application fee: Note that Saint Mary's alumni, students seeking readmission, veterans, and active military personnel are exempt from this application fee.
  • Official transcripts: An official transcript issued to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota from the institution posting the applicant’s completed degree and other relevant transcripts documenting program prerequisites and potential transfer credits must be sent separately and directly from your institution. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota accepts official transcripts electronically from previously attended institutions. Transcripts should be sent to or mailed to:

  • A written statement: Describe your personal background, training, career goals, and experience as related to your interest in special education. Highlight your unique strengths and potential areas of growth that could be improved through a special education degree program with Saint Mary's.
  • Letters of reference: Two letters of reference or recommendation that verify your academic ability and professional or volunteer experience.
  • An up-to-date résumé: Include both your educational and professional experience.

Applicants with completed applications by this priority date will be guaranteed a required admissions interview and will be considered for acceptance into the upcoming semester.

Applicants with completed applications by this date will not be guaranteed consideration for the upcoming semester, but may be considered for this or a future semester pending timing and enrollment capacity.

Note: Applications are considered complete when they have been submitted with the $25 application fee and all required materials including official transcript(s) with the applicant’s degree and two letters of recommendation have been received. All applicants will be contacted by program staff to schedule a required enrollment interview.
