Admissions
When reviewing your application, we strive to get to know you beyond requirements like GPA and transcripts. - An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
- A minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale (If your overall GPA is below 2.75, you may receive provisional status in the program at the discretion of the MSCS program director.)
You don’t need prior work experience or a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity to be accepted. If needed, you can complete the following prerequisite course at Saint Mary’s University: CYBR 590 Computer Networking.
- This course does not apply to your degree
- This prerequisite can be waived with college courses, certificates, or work experience. Please speak with an enrollment counselor for more information
GMAT and GRE scores are not required.
You can transfer six credits you earned before admission to Saint Mary’s. Transfer credits are subject to graduate school and program criteria, as well as the recommendation of the program director and approval by the dean.
Work and life experience are not accepted as credit for this program.
Students with transcripts from universities outside the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada (except for the Quebec Province) are required to take and pass English proficiency testing.
Saint Mary’s accepts the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 72
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.0
- Michigan Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 74%
- International Test of English Proficiency (ITEP) with a minimum score of 4.0 or Pearson Test of English with a score of 51
- Duolingo with a minimum score of 100
Whether you apply through our online application, via hard copy, or in-person with a Saint Mary’s enrollment counselor, your application must include the following items:
- $25 non-refundable application fee: Note that Saint Mary’s alumni, students seeking readmission, veterans, and active military personnel are exempt from this application fee
- Official transcripts: An official transcript issued to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota from the institution posting the applicant’s completed degree and other relevant transcripts documenting program prerequisites and potential transfer credits must be sent separately and directly from your institution. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota accepts official transcripts electronically from previously attended institutions. Transcripts should be sent to oladmissions@smumn.edu or mailed to:

The program is made up of 12 courses and 36 credit hours. You can complete it in less than two years.

Is this program accredited?
This program does not currently have industry-specific accreditation. However, as a new program, it's designed to give you fresh perspectives and stand at the leading edge of cybersecurity trends and hiring manager needs. Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
What will my fellow students in this program be like?
Your fellow students will have a broad range of business and IT experience and enrich your learning environment with perspectives in multiple disciplines. Will my degree say that it is from an online program?
No. It's also important to note that your degree is of the same quality and possesses the same prestige as an on-campus degree from Saint Mary's.
Can I transfer credits from another university and graduate program?
It is possible to transfer credits from another university if the course descriptions match the descriptions of Saint Mary's courses. The program director will review any possible credit transfers.
Is there prerequisite coursework for this program?
Students must have an undergraduate or graduate computer networking course completed before taking the first course in this curriculum. We provide a foundational course, CYBR590 Computer Networking, for those who need the prerequisite knowledge. Note that this foundational course does not count toward your 36-credit degree.
